Frequently Asked Questions
Brand and Process
Who is Argonaut Cycles?
Argonaut Cycles is a passionate team of cyclists and craftspeople dedicated to designing, engineering, and building the world's best riding carbon fiber bicycles. Every Argonaut is made to deliver unmatched performance, ride feel, and individuality—the result of our obsession with precision and innovation.
Where are Argonaut bikes made?
Our entire process—from design and engineering to carbon layup, paint, and final assembly—happens under one roof in Bend, Oregon. Building in-house ensures total control over quality and craftsmanship at every step.
What makes Argonaut different from other custom carbon builders?
Unlike other custom carbon builders, we don't just build to fit—we build to feel. Our proprietary carbon layup tuning allows us to tailor the frame's stiffness, compliance, and responsiveness to the individual rider. Combined with in-house geometry design and full-custom paint, every Argonaut is a singular expression of performance and personality.
What is the HPSM process?
HPSM—High-Pressure Silicon Molding—is the key to our unparalleled ride quality. This rigid mandrel technology gives us absolute control over fiber orientation and resin flow during curing. The result is carbon parts that are lighter, stronger, and more precise than traditional bladder molding allows.
How does Argonaut ensure frame alignment and quality?
Every Argonaut frame is built one part at a time using HPSM—a head tube here, a seat cluster there—and then bonded together into sub-assemblies. Each stage undergoes precise alignment checks using specialized tooling that measures within fractions of a millimeter—the result: a perfectly straight frame and a flawless ride.
What's the difference between an Argonaut and a production carbon bike?
We build for the rider, not for the masses. Every Argonaut is custom-engineered—from geometry to carbon layup to finish—ensuring a perfect union between rider and machine. Our control over the entire build process allows us to deliver a level of performance, comfort, and craftsmanship that production carbon bikes simply can't match.
How long has Argonaut been building bikes?
Argonaut began building steel bikes in 2007, shifted to carbon fiber in 2015, and brought every step of production in-house by 2020. Nearly two decades of evolution and innovation have refined our process into what we proudly consider the pinnacle of custom carbon craftsmanship.
Can I visit the Argonaut facility?
Absolutely! We love sharing what we do. Visit us at 2777 NW Lolo Drive, Bend, Oregon, Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., or email contact@argonautcycles.com to schedule your tour. CSeewhere the world's best carbon bikes are made.
Does Argonaut build every frame in-house?
From concept to completion, every Argonaut is crafted by our team in Bend. We design, engineer, manufacture, and paint each frame ourselves—ensuring total control over quality, precision, and performance. This in-house approach is what makes an Argonaut truly unique among custom carbon builders.
Product Line and Model Differences
What's the difference between the RM3 and the GR3?
The Argonaut RM3 is our ultimate road machine—built for speed, precision, and all-day performance. The Argonaut GR3 is its gravel counterpart, designed for race-ready handling and rugged terrain. The RM3's refined geometry and HPSM-crafted carbon deliver unmatched responsiveness on the road, while the GR3's shorter chainstays and aggressive head angle make it lightning-quick and stable off-pavement.
Are Argonaut bikes fully custom or semi-custom?
Argonaut offers both fully custom and semi-custom options. Every Argonaut is tailored to your fit and riding style. Every GR3 and RM3 is semi-custom—details like crank length, spacer stack, and bar width are personalized to you. Our full custom builds go even further, tuning the carbon layup, geometry, and paint to create a truly one-of-one bicycle.
How much do Argonaut bikes weigh?
Final weight depends on your chosen components, but most builds average around 15 lbs for the RM3 and 16 lbs for the GR3. Every Argonaut prioritizes ride quality and performance over chasing the lightest possible number—balance and feel come first.
What components or build kits are available?
We spec only the best components in cycling, offering top-shelf options from Campagnolo, Shimano, and SRAM. Wheelsets from Scope and Princeton CarbonWorks are common pairings, though we accommodate a wide range of premium selections to match your vision. Every Argonaut build is designed to perform flawlessly from first ride to final sprint.
Do you offer complete bikes or framesets only?
We offer complete bikes and framesets across our RM3 and GR3 models. Whether you want to build your dream ride or receive a fully assembled masterpiece, we make it possible.
How do Argonaut geometries differ between models?
The RM3 geometry delivers precision handling and acceleration—it's a road bike that feels alive under power, with a stable front end for confident descending and a rear triangle tuned for instant response. The GR3 geometry pushes the limits of modern gravel racing with a slacker head angle, clearance for 50mm tires, and a rear center shorter than many road bikes—agile, fast, and unshakably composed.
Fit and Customization
How does the Argonaut custom fit process work?
The Argonaut custom fit process starts with you, the rider. Our goal isn't to fit you into a standard frame. We aim to identify your ideal biomechanical window for maximum power output, pedaling efficiency, and comfort. From these precise measurements, we determine the perfect bike geometry for you. Some riders may fit one of our 13 proven sizes, while others benefit from a fully custom geometry. It all depends on your unique body and riding style. Fits can be completed at our Bend, Oregon, facility using the Guru Dynamic Fit Machine, or through one of our authorized fit specialists worldwide. No matter the method, we guarantee your Argonaut will be a perfect fit.
What measurements or data do I need to provide?
We can work with existing fit data from a previous bike you love or a recent professional bike fit. Ideally, we recommend a fresh fit with one of our authorized specialists, or a visit to Bend for a facility tour and direct fitting. If a new fit isn't possible, we can also use contact point data from your current bike—saddle height, stack, reach, and cockpit dimensions—as a starting point for designing your custom geometry.
Can I choose my paint or finish?
Absolutely! Every Argonaut is painted in-house. We offer a curated selection of colors and finishes, and our paint visualizer allows you to explore and configure your perfect scheme. From frame prep to primer, color, and final buff, we handle 100% of the paint process ourselves. Whether you want a unique one-off, a color-matched bike to your car, or anything in between, we're excited to bring your vision to life. RM3 standard finish: High-gloss automotive-grade for durability and to showcase the beauty of the carbon fiber. GR3 standard finish: Cerakote ceramic matte finish, tough enough to handle gravel, dirt, and the occasional crash.
What ride characteristics can be tuned (stiffness, compliance, etc.)?
Every aspect of your Argonaut's ride can be custom-tuned for your body and riding style. Using High Pressure Silicon Molding (HPSM), we lay up each frame part—bottom bracket, seat cluster, head tube—ply by ply with unidirectional and 3k carbon fiber. This gives us absolute control over the anisotropic properties of carbon. The result: carbon that flexes precisely where you need it, resists in directions that require stiffness, and delivers a ride tailored entirely to you—not an "average" rider. Every pedal stroke, corner, and descent is optimized for clarity, control, and confidence.
Is every Argonaut truly one-of-a-kind?
Yes. Every Argonaut is unique. Whether you choose a fully custom bike with a layup tuned to your physiology or an RM3 for high-performance speed, no two Argonauts are alike. From frame geometry to component selection, stem length, and paint finish, we build each bike to order, never from stock. Your Argonaut is built for you, and only you.

Ride Experience and Performance
What does an Argonaut bike feel like to ride?
Riding an Argonaut is a rare kind of alignment—where the frame responds before you even ask, power flows without whisper or loss, and the road becomes a dialogue, not an obstacle. Stiffness is purposeful, immediate, but never harsh. Compliance exists exactly where you need it, filtering noise while preserving the signal.
What stands out most is clarity: every pedal stroke matters, every line holds, every descent trusts you as much as you trust it. Argonauts are not louder than other bikes—they are quieter, and in that quiet, you finally hear what you're capable of.
How does the RM3 compare to other high-end road bikes?
The RM3 stands apart as the pinnacle of road performance. Every pedal stroke, every wheel revolution, every mile feels perfectly aligned with your intent. To illustrate, think of stepping from a top-of-the-line Audi into your dream Porsche 930 Turbo—the refinement, responsiveness, and emotion are instant and unmistakable. The RM3 evokes excitement, anticipation, and intuition, delivering a ride that feels naturally, undeniably right.
Can I race an Argonaut?
Absolutely! Racing is central to our passion. Whether it's waking early to watch Grand Tours, competing in a local crit, or joining friends for a gravel weekend, Argonaut bikes are built to race—and we want you to do the same.
How durable are Argonaut frames?
Incredibly durable. Our standard-modulus carbon exceeds typical industry standards, prioritizing ride quality and real-world performance. We design for riders who travel, ride hard daily, and aren't afraid to take bold lines—even if it means a crash or two along the way.
What pro teams or athletes ride Argonaut?
Argonaut doesn't sponsor a full pro team, but our Factory Racing program supports riders like Cassius Anderson and Matthew Wiebe, Bay Area crushers racing internationally off-road.
What type of terrain are Argonaut bikes designed for?
RM3: Pinnacle of road cycling. Steep Alpine climbs, fast Midwest roads, and technical California descents. Anywhere the road takes you, the RM3 is the perfect vehicle to enjoy it.
GR3: Ultimate gravel performer. The gnarlier the terrain, the better. The fork eats washboard, the downtube absorbs drops like an XC MTB, and handling stays snappy like a crit bike. If you can dream it, the GR3 can ride it.
What makes the GR3 ideal for gravel racing?
Gravel races are won in moments of technical selection: tight singletrack, steep loose descents, terrain that seems impossible for a drop bar bike. The GR3 is engineered to excel from the carbon itself—its layup-designed suspension lets you ride faster across rough terrain. Its ultra-short rear end preserves acceleration and snappiness like a road bike, keeping you ahead on climbs and dominating descents.
